The Philippines, an archipelagic country, is sometimes overlooked by the world. The 7,107 islands that comprise this Southeast Asian destination have much to offer. Located between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea, this exotic spot is rich with natural resources. In fact, the Philippines is one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world. According to the Wikipedia, “The megadiverse countries are a group of countries that harbor the majority of the earth's species and are therefore considered extremely biodiverse. The World Conservation Monitorin Centre, an agency of the United Nations Environment Programme, has identified 17 megadiverse countries, most located in the tropics.” Other than its splendid biodiversity the Philippines also has one of the most resilient and happy people in the globe! Amidst the history of cruel colonialism and sporadic battles with terrorism in the far South, Filipinos have continued to remain flexible, always rebounding with a renewed hope! The Philippines has three major island groups namely, Luzon,Visayas and Mindanao. And each has their own unique landscapes and diversity that every traveler will enjoy! The Diversity of LuzonLuzon is the largest among the three island groups. It is also the economic and political center of the country. Manila City is the capital of the nation. It is also a kaleidoscope of historical sites, such as the Intramuros and Fort Santiago, shopping malls and great cuisine. To learn more about the country’s history, visitors can take the ferry to Corregidor Island from Manila bay. Makati City, however, is the premier financial district of the country. Travelers can find the most luxurious hotels and restaurants along with designer label shops in Makati! Up north in Luzon travelers can head to the summer capital of the Phillipines, Baguio City. A cool place in the high altitudes. Further north is Banaue with is enchanting rice terrraces and Sagada where one can go caving and enjoy its unspoiled beauty. Other amazing spots are the Hundred Islands in Pangsinan which is the second largest marine reservation in the world. For diving enthusiasts Puerto Galera in Mindoro and the Palawan island which is a natural sanctuary has some of the best marine life in the world! Beautiful Beaches of VisayasThe Visayas region is famous for its white sand beaches and artistic handicrafts. Cebu City is the commercial center of this region is also full of historical sites. While in nearby Mactan Island visitors can find wonderful beach resorts. The world-famous Boracay Isand is also found in this region where one can find the finest baby powder white sand along its beach. Its clear turquiose water and beautiful sunsets make this island ideal for relaxation. Another scenic place in this region is Bohol where visitors can find the amazing Chocolate Hills, the smallest primates in the world and beautiful white sand beaches. Nature-tripping in MindanaoMindanao is the second largest island in the Philippines. Davao City is the economic center of this region. This city has a very laid back atmosphere with wonderful beaches just a few minutes away! There are a lot of exotic fruits and flowers to be discovered in this region such as the famous odd-smelling Durian or the unique Marang. Since Mindanao has one of the most fertile soil in the land and is protected from typhoons, this region is ideal for farming. For those who want to conquer the highest peak in the country, climbers can head to Mount Apo in Davao del Sur. To see one of the largest and most powerful birds in the world, visit the Philippine Eagle Foundation and help preserve this majestic wonder.
