Enjoy this tasty and crunchy Indian fritters made from healthy banana flower. This snack is perfect for a rainy day or a cold winter afternoon.

What healthier snack can an Indian home on a rainy day than a hot fritter, that too, when made from a banana blossom. Banana flowers are rich in nutrients and can be made in various styles. Below is a simple yet innovative recipe which provides goodness in flavour and nutrients for the entire family. Also see other recipes using banana flowers.

The Ingredients

  • 1 chopped banana flower
  • 1 onion
  • 3/4 cup bengal gram/channa dal
  • 4 green chillies
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 2 teaspoons crushed ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon tumeric powder
  • 8 to 10 finely chopped curry leaves
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Method

  1. First, work on the banana flower. In order to avoid sticking, Apply oil on both the hands to avoid sticking. Then take off the purple outer layers of the blossom and remove the bunches of florets. Continue doing so till the core of the blossom is reached
  2. Separate the florets and remove the stamen which has a black tip. Chop the florets into fine pieces and soak them in curd and salt so that the florets do not turn brown.
  3. Mix the soaked banana florets with the bengal gram, chopped onions, chillies, tumeric power, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, curry leaves, coriander, crushed ginger and salt together. Form a dough without adding water.
  4. Heat oil in a deep frying pan
  5. Make small patties with the dough and fry till golden brown when the oil is hot.
  6. When fried, drain the excess oil and serve with chilli sauce or chutney.

This is an easy snack to make and makes perfect comfort food on a rainy day with a piping hot cup of coffee or tea. Kids and adults will love this innovative snack and come asking for more.
